LSA Ladies Team in the National Track & Field League

(Report by Enda Gavigan)

We had a little bit of LSA history made on Sunday when our Ladies team qualified for the final of the National Track and Field Outdoor League. Qualification took place over two days: Round 1 on 22nd May at the Mary Peters track in Belfast and Round 2 on 31st July at the TUS track in Athlone. The final takes place in Tullamore on the 14th August.

The Track and Field League is a Team event where teams compete in up to twenty one disciplines over the course of the day, and score points in their best fifteen events. Teams are allowed to have two guest athletes join in order to cover all the disciplines.

Team LSA got off to a storming start with Cabinteely AC guest Ella Carey placing 2nd in the 100m Hurdles followed by a win in the High Jump at 1.5m. Fiona Branigan had a great outing in the 1500m Race Walk in Belfast; for Round 2, Ellen Gavigan took on this event, missing out on the win by the narrowest of margins: two hundredths of a second.

After a great performance in Hammer and Javelin in Belfast, unfortunately Mary Dalton was unavailable for Athlone, but we hope to have her back for the final.

Alison Branigan took a fall in the very slippy conditions in the 400m Hurdles, but managed to get up and continue to score valuable points for the team.

Anna Gavigan was well ahead in winning the Discus and produced a great Shot Putt throw of over 10m to score nine points for each win. She was supported by Nicole Michael guesting in the Shot Putt with a great throw of 7.04m.

Our 4 x 100m relay team comprised guest from Mid-Sutton AC Lara O’Connor, Maria Carr, Michelle Branigan and Ella Carey (Cabinteely AC). They provided great excitement and were just pipped into fourth place at the line.

Eimear Caulfield built on a great 1500m in Belfast by finishing 2nd in Athlone. Maria Carr battled it out for third in the 400m.

After a great 3000m win in Belfast, Sophie Mataboro had a strong start in Athlone but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury. We hope she’s fit for the final.

With our Javelin thrower Mary Dalton unavailable for Athlone, it was all hands on deck with Alison Branigan standing in to throw for the team.

Michelle Branigan battled it out for fourth place in a tough 800m, and an injured Dara Carr picked up great points with a third place finish in her first time trying Weight for Distance.

Ella Carey (Cabinteely AC) had a great 4.68m long jump for 2nd place, with Ellen Gavigan competing alongside as a guest with a best jump of 4.25m.

Eimear Caulfield bravely took on the 3k Steeplechase for the first time with a fantastic 2nd place finish, providing great entertainment with her waterjump technique!

Speedy Lara O’Connor (Mid-Sutton AC) had a great 3rd place in the 100m sprint and the day was rounded off by our 4 x 400m team of Maria Carr, Sarah Minto, Alison Branigan and Michelle Branigan.

It’s a big undertaking to organise and field a team, so great credit to all involved. It’s a great achievement to make the final in our first year – we look forward to the final in Tullamore on Sunday 14th August!

An important message from Enda...

Hi folks. Our Ladies National League Team (aged 15-53!) has been a huge success with the added bonus of qualifying for the league final on Sunday 14th August. We were very stuck for support people last Sunday as there is a good bit of team coordination needed but as always, each club has to supply two officials to help with measuring etc. So… if anyone is available to come to Tullamore on Sunday 14th, to do a bit of measuring etc, it would be much appreciated. (Unlike the juveniles days)It won’t be too demanding and you get a front row seat! We rotate regularly so nobody gets overtasked! A PM would be great if you can assist.
