VHI Parkrun Hero February 2023

While on the subject of volunteering a huge well done to member, coach and co-director of Newbridge Junior Parkrun Karen Molony on being nominated for and winning VHI Parkrun Hero for February. Here's what Karen had to say about her award...

"Aisling Hegarty and I are the co event directors of Newbridge House Junior Parkrun. Six months ago we were strangers. Jen Tanner put us in touch. We'd both been bitten by the LSA bug, and shared a goal to make running outdoors a habit for life for ourselves and for our children. Bringing junior parkrun to our community has been a concrete step towards that goal. So far it has been hard work and a great joy. Every week we need 18+ volunteers, and every week there is a smattering of LSA members on the volunteer roster; including all five run directors so far (Dara, Jen, Taz, Aisling and me... we've high hopes for a couple of others in the near future too!), not to mention stalwart volunteer, Pat C, who goes above and beyond to ensure we have a clean course. Every single smiling child on a Sunday morning is the biggest reward we could ask for, and seeing the little athletics that we coach showing up, and loving it, is absolutely priceless. I'm honoured to be awarded the February 2023 park run hero award, and grateful to all of the volunteers who continue to support Newbridge House Junior Parkrun. I hope it will be fun, free, for every 4-14 year old, and forever a friend of a club."

TRACK & FIELD

Track and Field report-National and International update

by Enda Gavigan

Last weekend we wrapped up our very busy Indoor season both at home and abroad.

Dara Carr and Steven Rice were in Toruń last week, representing Ireland at the World Masters Championship in 60m and 200m for Dara and the M50 Half Marathon for Steven.

Going into her 60m heat (which was a semi-final) Dara was seeded 4th from a Pb of 8.74 and she would need to be very close to this to make the final. Action was at 9:20am as is often the case for the sprint heats so it was an early breakfast, rub the sleep out of the eyes and get fully warmed up by 8.45. 60m is not a race you can ease into!! On the morning, Dara produced a great effort with an SB of 8.89 just missing out on qualification for the final.

In her W50 200m heat, Dara comfortably took second to qualify for the semis in 30.13s. Fifth in her semi in 29.57 was unfortunately not enough to make the final but a great effort nonetheless.

As if all that wasn’t enough, Dara also represented Ireland on the W50 4x200m relay team. Always a high octane event in which you never leave home without your keys or the changeover zone without your baton (generally J).

An excellent run from the team of Katherine Markey, Dara Carr, Margaret O’Connor and Linda Nally set a new W50 National record of 1:57.05 (this to be officially confirmed) and second in their heat. With the medals being decided on times from the heats, the team finished up in fourth place, a mere 1.42s outside the bronze.

At the other end of the running spectrum, Steven Rice was part of the three person M50 Team Ireland entry for the Half Marathon, teaming up with Patrick O’Grady and Ian Egan. Being a team event, all three athletes run the full half marathon with the times tallied up to give the team total. Its an exciting event. In a very close finish, Team Ireland won an excellent Bronze medal with an aggregate time of 4:10:23, just 3:46 behind the silver medal German team with Poland taking Gold.

Congratulations to both Dara and Steven on a great World Masters week.

National Indoor Juvenile Finals

A little closer to home we had our two older juvenile qualifiers, Michelle Branigan and Suzie Linkiewicz in action at the National Indoor Juvenile Finals at the AIT Athlone. Michelle Branigan in U18 400m and Suzie Linkiewicz U18 60m.

Michelle was up first in a very lively 400m heat. A time of 1:06, just outside her PB for the distance was unfortunately not enough to make the final but a great effort nonetheless.

In her 60m heat, Suzie ran a fine 8.18s to secure a place in the final. The final was a very close fought affair with Suzie producing a PB of 8.13s to secure 5th place just 0.09s off the bronze!

Well done to both Michelle and Suzie closing what has been an exciting indoor season
