JUVENILE NEWS

National Junior Championships

Another busy weekend for our Juveniles at the National Junior Championships (U20)

On Saturday 14th , it was back to the National Indoor Arena as three of our Juveniles once again took to the track as part of their preparation for the upcoming Dublin Juvenile Championships. And it was certainly in at the deep end again as this was the National Junior Track and Field Championship (U20). This didn’t seem to phase our three athletes as you are about to see!

Recent joiner, Suzie Linkiewicz went from strength to strength with another great outing in the 60m sprint, producing a PB with a time of 8.18.

Eabha O’Farrell, in only her second ever 400m race found herself in the fastest heat of the day. Up against such tough competition, Eabha managed to knock nearly 1.5 seconds of her Pb with a time of 1.05.19

Michelle Branigan, in the 800m was also anxious to improve on her recent great showing at the NIA Live. She ran a very well planned race and really worked hard on lap three to maintain her pace. The plan paid off handsomely with a new PB of 2.36.27.

So, it was PBs all round! A big congratulations to the athletes on three great performances.

Next up will be NIA live on Wednesday evening 18 th January where a number of our sprinters will be in action again.

The Dublin Indoor Juvenile Championship is now fast approaching, pencilled in for NIA Dublin 4 th and 5 th Feb, 12 th Feb, 25 th and 26th Feb. A number of adults have volunteered to help out and thank you very much to them. We still need more help, so if you can spare a few hours on any of the dates, it would be very much appreciated.

Those dates are NIA Dublin February 4th , 5th , 12th , 25th and 26th. Contact Dara or Louise or any committee member please.

Juvenile Competition – Dublin Indoor Championships 2023

What is it?

This is the Championships for the Dublin Region, organised by Dublin Athletics. It is also the qualifying competition for entry to National Championships : The first three in each age category from Under 12 and older progress to the National Championships.

Who can take part?

Athletes from Under 9 (born 2015) to Under 19 (born 2005) compete in the Juvenile Age Groups.

Where does it take place?

The venue is the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown, Dublin 15 (in the Sport Ireland Campus close to the National Aquatic Centre). The indoor arena has a perimeter of 200m (whereas an outdoor track is 400m).

What events are available?

All age groups have a 60m sprint. This takes place in the centre of the arena. All age groups have a middle distance event – the distance starts at 300m for U9, which is a lap and a half.

Under 12s and older can take part in some Field events (Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Putt). Under 13s and older also have 60m hurdles.

Relays

All age groups have a 4 x 200m relay. These take place on Sunday 26th February. Athletes can move up an age group, but at least two athletes must be the correct age for their team. For example, an Under 10 team could comprise two Under 10 athletes (born in 2014) and two Under 9 athletes (born in 2015) who are stepping up an age group.

We would aim to have a squad of six, to form a team of four and two reserves.

3. To enter, please DM the LSA Juvenile Competition Secretary with:

-your child’s Date of Birth and

-the event they wish to take part in.

What can parents do to help?

It is a condition of competition that all clubs must provide volunteers to help with the running of events on the day. We will ask parents to do this. No experience is needed and you will enjoy it. Our coaches will be needed in the warm up area to help the athletes prepare for their events.
