Juvenile Virtual Cross Country challenge
Athletics Ireland have given us this update on the virtual cross country challenge that our Juveniles participated in last month.
“18 Dublin clubs participated with 1280 athletes running. Nationally, 120 clubs participated with over 4600 running”
Well done to all our athletes who took part! We shared photos of the day on our Facebook Page
Big shout out to our Donal Iremonger with an impressive run in a historic 10 mile cross country handicap challenge on St Stephen’s day!
Donore Harriers were given special permission to run the 124th Waterhouse Byrne Baird challenge shield-socially distanced by nature!
It should be noted that the Phoenix Park made an exception and allowed it to go ahead because of its long history of being run continuously, and also the open handicap format lent itself to social distancing with the 40+ participants starting at different times over a 35 minute period. Measures were also taken to prevent people gathering at the start / finish area.
Donal, who coaches our Juvenile Cross country group, finished second with an incredible time of 66 mins 59 seconds (his fastest time since 2002 when he also finished second!).
No regrets for Donal though-he gave it all but was caught in the last mile by a speedy 16 year old who had glided through the mud to make up the 4 min 30 handicap.
I had a shot at it yesterday, I knew I was in good shape, and my handicap of 16 minutes wasn't generous, but it was fair. It's tough to have come so close again (I was second in 2002) and not win but I'm proud of my performance .
